Barton Springs & Edwards Aquifer

                                    Water temperature

The Barton springs water temperature stays at a constant temperature of 68.0 °F. The reason for this is because the water comes from the Edwards Aquifer before it gets to Barton Springs. Edwards Aquifer is naturaly cold because it is located deep underground where the sunlight doesn't penitrate into the caves. Our local caves are made of limestone.

                                            Water Flow

Barton Springs act as a distributator in wich the water flows freely. The water can be affected in many ways. One way is run off water. There are parking lots, farms, streets, and homes surrounding Barton Springs that could contain contaminates and affect the water quality. If the water were to be cantaminated the endagered species may be harmed or even extinct.

With around 400,000 visitors every year, it is important to protect Barton Springs and the Aquifer that supplies the water for such enjoyment.

Some ways we can help our water supply is making sure that our cars are not leaking oil, gas, freeon, ect. We can also limit the amount of fertilizer that we add into our grass. Last we can use our water wisely.
Barton Springs pumps 27 million gallons of water a day.

                                            Our trip

This week we went to Barton Springs to find the quality of the water. We did a chemical test that would let us know the levels of Dissolved Oxygen, Nitrates, and Phosphates. We discovered that the quality of the water was good. The levels of Disolved Oxygen is high wich is good for the plants to stay alive. Also we found that the levels of Nitrate and Phosphate is very low wich means they only have the amount they need to grow green and strong. Too much of Nitrate and Phosphate is bad because it would make the plants over grow and die out. This is bad because when this happens bacteria break down the dead plants and use up all the oxygen that the plants need. So mabe preventing too much fetelizers or detergents go to our Springs would keep the Springs in check.
